The lips are among the first to show signs of aging on the face. That’s why patients are looking for ways to give their lips a more plump, full appearance. One of which is a lip filler procedure, a great alternative to plastic surgery as it’s minimally invasive and has minimal downtime. But just like any other cosmetic treatment, the right aftercare is crucial for making sure that results last for a long time.

So what are the aftercare tips that lip filler patients should follow? Your cosmetic provider will provide you with a personalized aftercare plan suited to your specific needs. Some tips that they will most likely give you would be to avoid touching, refrain from strenuous activities, drink water, apply a cold compress, and practice patience, among others.

Aftercare Instructions for Lip Fillers

As administering lip filler injections shouldn’t be done haphazardly, neither should the client neglect aftercare protocols. These are done to minimize risks associated with the treatment, as well as for maintenance – to enjoy fuller, plumper, more volumized lips for a longer time.

1) Follow the Doctor’s Lip Filler Aftercare Advice

Your cosmetic provider is an expert in dermal filler injections and aftercare, so it’s essential that you follow their advice closely to ensure a successful recovery and minimize the risk of complications. They’ll provide you with specific instructions tailored to your individual needs and the type of filler used – may that be hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, or poly-L-lactic acid, among others. Open communication with your provider is key.

2) Avoid Trauma to the Area

After receiving a lip filler injection, resist the temptation of touching the treated area for at least 24 hours. This is because the filler material needs time to settle and bond with your body’s tissues. Protecting your lips from accidental trauma (e.g., kissing, massaging, drinking from a straw) can prevent the filler from shifting, as well as ensure that you experience a smooth healing process from the treatment.

3) No Strenuous Activity

In the first 48 hours after your dermal filler procedure, avoid high-intensity activities like heavy lifting and running. These exercises can increase blood flow to the treated area, exacerbating swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Opt for light activities such as walking or gentle stretching, which can help you stay active without hindering your recovery.

4) Stay Hydrated

Most lip filler injections are made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring enzyme in your body that draws in water and locks moisture in your skin. This means that you would need to increase your water intake to ensure that your lips stay hydrated. If ever, you can also apply a gentle, fragrance-free lip balm to keep your lips moisturized.

In terms of food, go for soft, easy-to-eat options like yogurt, soup, smoothies, or mashed potatoes. As your lips begin to recover and the discomfort subsides, you can gradually reintroduce your regular diet.

5) Apply Cold Compress

After your lip filler treatment, gently apply an ice pack for 10 to 15 minutes (2 to 3 times a day) to reduce inflammation and to promote faster healing. Don’t apply the cold compress directly on the lips as this can cause frostbite or skin damage – just place it in the surrounding areas. Allow your lips to return to room temperature between applications.

6) Take Painkillers Like Tylenol

Another important lip filler aftercare advice is to take over-the-counter painkillers to alleviate bothersome pain or discomfort. We recommend taking acetaminophen (Tylenol). Double-check the recommended dosage instructions on the packaging or consult with your doctor.

Keep in mind that there are certain painkillers – like aspirin (Advil) or ibuprofen (Motrin) – that you should avoid. These medications are considered blood thinners – meaning they increase the risk of bruising and bleeding in the lips.

7) Avoid Smoking and Drinking

Refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol for at least 48 hours after your lip filler treatment. Both activities can dehydrate your body and slow down the healing process. For one, smoking can compromise the health of your skin, whereas alcohol can thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising.

8) Don’t Fly

While there’s no strict rule against traveling after receiving a lip filler injection, we suggest that you stay on the safe side. Air travel, particularly long flights, can exacerbate common symptoms (e.g., swelling, bruising, discomfort) due to changes in cabin pressure and altitude. The dry air inside the cabin can also dehydrate your body.

In the unlikely event that you experience complications or an adverse reaction to the lip filler, you may have limited access to medical care while in transit or if ever you’re visiting another location. It’s best to stay close to your skin clinic during the initial stages of recovery.

8) Schedule Maintenance Sessions

It’s vital to attend any scheduled follow-up lip injection appointments with your medical spa. These appointments allow your cosmetic provider to assess your progress, address any concerns, and maximize your results’ longevity.

9) Be Patient

Most importantly, practicing patience is one of the most important lip filler aftercare tips that you should follow. Good things take time. While some results may be visible immediately, the full effects can take up to 2 weeks to appear as swelling and bruising subsides. You also have to give your body time to adjust to the filler. That’s why we recommend that you get your dermal filler procedure a few weeks before any big event.
